Get this: the tip isn’t painted – but it’s still M855. “What does that mean?” the uninitiated might demand to know, and rightly. In short, the M855 full metal jacket projectile is designed to pierce body armor. Atop its lead core sits seven grains of steel: the “penetrator” tip, as it is so aptly named. M855 isn’t popular for target shooting because it’s better at poking holes through metal. In fact, its FMJ’s steel tip is precisely why you wouldn’t want to use M855 ammo for shooting steel gongs. It would damage the gongs. What really drives M855’s popularity is its bullet weight: 62 grains, which grants it more momentum (and higher resistance to wind deflection) than the M193 load’s standard 55 grain alternative. Once again, this is magnetic ammunition. Its penetrator tip is unwelcome at more than a couple of ranges, as it has a tendency to damage range equipment (and can also create sparks, which are bad to have wherever flammable things are around, such as people).
